Login.gov

Also called: Login dot gov

Definition

Login.gov is the federal government's shared sign-in service, run by GSA, which FMCSA uses for access to Motus and other registration systems.

Login.gov describes itself as a way to sign in to many US government websites with one account. It is run by the General Services Administration's Technology Transformation Services. When an agency requires identity verification, Login.gov asks for a government-issued ID, a Social Security number and a US phone number or mailing address, and sometimes a selfie.

FMCSA began requiring Login.gov for insurers, financial institutions and BOC-3 blanket agents filing through L&I in December 2024. For Motus, the company official's Login.gov email must match the one used in Motus, and that person must be the owner or an internal employee, not an outside consultant. Motus adds its own identity proofing for new applicants: a photo of a government ID and a face scan.

For a factor, these controls make fake new registrations harder. They protect the FMCSA account, not the carrier's email, phone or bank account, which remain open to attack.
