Fictitious pickup

Also called: Fictitious cargo pickup, Fraudulent pickup

Definition

A fictitious pickup is a cargo theft in which a criminal poses as a legitimate carrier or driver to collect a load from a shipper and never delivers it.

The thief books the load under a real carrier's identity, or a hijacked one, sends a truck that looks right, signs the bill of lading and disappears. Verisk CargoNet tracks it as its own category: it recorded 158 fictitious pickup incidents in Q2 2026, against 165 a year earlier, even as overall theft events fell.

Verisk also described non-delivery schemes in which criminals acquired existing, reputable motor carriers, booked shipments under their established authority, and picked up freight with no intent to deliver it. That is where pickup fraud meets a factor's file: the carrier passes vetting because its history is real.
