# Over-advance

**Definition:** An over-advance is money a factor has advanced to a carrier beyond the eligible value of the invoices it has purchased, leaving that excess unsecured.

Also called: Overadvance. Category: Factoring.

Over-advances form in a few ways: [fuel advances](https://carrierkyc.com/glossary/fuel-advance) not yet matched to invoices, advances on invoices later disputed or short-paid, chargebacks larger than the reserve, and cash a client asks for to cover repairs, payroll or insurance.

Once a client is over-advanced, you depend on its future invoices to get whole. That changes the incentives: refusing the next schedule may mean writing off the balance, so factors keep funding a weakening client. That is how a small exception becomes a large loss.

> **Red flag: Red flags** A client asking for an over-advance in its first weeks. Over-advance requests paired with a bank-account change. A balance growing while the client's volume falls. Any of these warrants a call to the client's owner, not just its dispatcher.

Track over-advance balances per client, cap them in writing, and require a repayment plan.
