# Carrier impersonation

**Definition:** Carrier impersonation is posing as a real, established motor carrier, using its name and USDOT and MC numbers, to book loads, apply for factoring or redirect its payments.

Also called: Carrier identity theft, Identity theft. Category: Fraud.

Impersonation doesn't require control of the carrier's accounts. A lookalike email, a spoofed phone number, a forged insurance certificate and a copy of the real company's paperwork are often enough. [Account takeover](https://carrierkyc.com/glossary/account-takeover) goes one step further, changing the carrier's FMCSA record or seizing its mailbox.

For a factor there are two exposures. An impersonator applies to you as the real carrier, passing every FMCSA check because the record is genuine. Or an impersonator writes to the real carrier's brokers, or to you, to move payments to a new account. FMCSA lists identity theft among the fraud it designed Motus to reduce.

> **Red flag: Red flags** Contact details on the application that differ from the FMCSA record. An applicant reachable only by text or a mobile number. An insurance certificate from an agent who can't be reached at the agency's published number. A bank account that doesn't match the carrier's legal name.

Call the carrier at a phone number with history, verify that the person applying is the company official or an authorized officer, and confirm bank ownership.
